sales quiz:
what’s the NCAA basketball tournament
worth to the teams?
sales answer:
This year, just an invitation to play in the NCAA tournament is worth more than $164,000 -- plus an additional $164,000+ for each game played, according to The Washington Post. This year’s Final Four teams (Florida, George Mason, LSU and UCLA) each earned more than $984,000 for their play up to this point, but the NCAA doesn’t pay a financial incentive for the championship game.
The money goes to the conferences, which are encouraged to split the take among all conference schools. With two teams (Florida and LSU) in the Final Four, and a total of 17 tournament games played by its teams, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has earned nearly $3.8 million for the 2006 tournament.
The NCAA basketball championship airs tonight on CBS.
