sales quiz:
how fast are iTunes selling?
sales answer:
Around 2a.m. EST on February 23, 2006, more than 1 million iTunes were sold in just seconds as the site's download counter neared the 1 billion mark. One lucky iTunes fan in Detroit scored the 1 billionth tune (Coldplay's "Speed of Sound"), along with an iMac, 10 iPods, and a $10,000 iTunes gift card -- plus, Apple established a 4-year scholarship to The Julliard School of Music in his name.
On iTunes one-year anniversary on April 28, 2004, Apple reported more than 70 million songs downloaded at a rate of 2.7 million songs per week. By late January 2005, iTunes had hit a quarter of a billion downloads. Then less than six months later, Apple announced that customers had downloaded more than 500 million songs.
In its first week, iTunes sold one million songs. Half of those songs were purchased as albums, and more than half of the 200,000 songs available were purchased at least once.
